Match reports August 2023

Saturday 26th August 2023

Today Dinas welcomed Pontyclun to St Andrews Road, with the home side looking to secure another home win they started the better leading by 10 shots after five ends. Then we had a slight downpour but this didn't stop the home side pushing on to lead by 22 shots at the 10th end. Pontyclun rinks of the Fielding brothers played some great bowls to keep their rinks in contention. However, Dinas kept up the pressure and Matt Woodcock's rink picked up a one on the last end to secure all 14 points available.
Final score - Dinas Powis 96-47 Pontyclun Rink scores
Rink scores: M Woodcock 17-16 R Fielding  M Prosser 32-10 G Fielding  C Chapman 25-8 K Agius  R Bowen 22-13 R Price
Our second team travelled to Cardiff Athletic and found it a hard day at the office, but the rink of H Lloyd, K Davies, T Gittings and Paul 'Mare' Marksie earned 2 points for the visitors (MW)

Many congratulations to the Dinas Powis quartet of Andrew Harvey, Tim Hurcom, Paul Marks, Gerry White and Chris Williams all of whom were part of the Vale of Glamorgan County Bowling Association Senior Team who won the Welsh National Championship Title at Llandrindod Wells. The team beat Monmouthshire BA in the semi-final by three shots in the morning session (94-91) and defeated West Glamorgan BA by a nail biting one shot (98-97) in the final, to record their first Senior title since 2011.

Special mention also to Mike Prosser in his first season as County Team Manager who encouraged and cajoled his charges to victory throughout their six match campaign.

Saturday 19th August 2023

Dinas Powys Bowls Club, affectionately known as the Smurfs, welcomed the formidable Whitchurch team to their home turf in a highly anticipated match. The day kicked off with a powerful display of camaraderie as Dinas Powys' captain, Matthew, delivered an inspiring pre-match speech that left his players ready to give their all.

On Rink 1, aptly dubbed "the show rink," where Matthew "Woody" Woodcock took on the challenge presented by Geoff Lewis. The battle was intense from the outset, with Dinas holding a slim lead of six shots to four after five ends. However, the Smurfs showed their mettle, and by the halfway point (10 ends), they had stretched their advantage to a comfortable 15 shots to four. As the match progressed, Dinas Powys continued to dominate, showcasing their skill and teamwork. When the dust settled at 21 ends, Dinas emerged victorious with a resounding scoreline of 29-10.
Over on Rink 2, Mike Prosser faced off against the formidable Malcolm "the bear" Mitchell. Despite adversity striking early, with Dinas' third Darren Turner battling knee pain, his unwavering dedication was evident as he played through the discomfort, earning the title of clubman of the day. The contest was a nail-biter throughout, and after 10 intense ends, Dinas found themselves trailing 8-12. Undeterred, the Smurfs displayed tremendous resilience, fighting tooth and nail to turn the tide. The final outcome was a heart-pounding 20-18 victory for Dinas, a testament to their unyielding determination.
Rink 3 witnessed Richard "Coach" Bowen locking horns with Iwan Rodger's. Dinas Powys asserted their dominance early on, amassing a formidable lead of 15-6 after 10 ends. This advantage provided the impetus for the team to maintain their momentum, and by the culmination of the game's 21 ends, Dinas had sealed a convincing 29-16 win.
On Rink 4, Chris "the giraffe" Chapman took on Owain Lebreton in a closely contested match. The Smurfs found themselves narrowly ahead at the 10-end mark, leading 10-9. The subsequent ends saw Dinas display their prowess, steadily building their advantage and ultimately securing a decisive 28-15 triumph. Chris "the giraffe" Chapman, when asked for his thoughts, shared a lighthearted quote: "Gareth GG Griffiths oozes class. With lance and network, I couldn't be happier."
Dinas took all 14 points available winning 106-59
Unfortunately the Dinas 'A' team travelled up to Guest Memorial but came away empty handed, losing on all three rinks.

Wednesday 16th August 2023                                                                                                                                                                        The Midweek team completed their Munro Cup season as they welcomed our nearest and dearest neighbours from the Murch on a lovely bright evening for bowls. Dinas got off to a quick start and after six ends had moved into a 17 shot lead, aided by Ritchie Janes’ rink picking up two fours and Tim Hurcom moving the jack for a count of six on end five.  Dinas extended their lead to 38 through the middle six ends with three rinks well in front. Gareth Griffiths’ rink meanwhile were in a close battle with Roger Mauchline on rink six (no Paul Marks this week!!) and after picking up a five on end 16 to move four in front seemed set to snatch a win. Unfortunately, they then dropped two’s on each of the last ends to draw 18-18.

In the final count Dinas recorded a resounding 99-47 win and collected 13 points following a very entertaining game enjoyed by all.                      After losing two of the first three games of the season the midweek team went on to win the next 11 games and finish the season with 152 points but were unable to retain the Munro Cup as they were just pipped to the title by a very good Barry Romilly team.                                                      Final score - Dinas Powis 99 (13pts) The Murch 47 (1pt)                                                                                                                                  Rink scores: R Charlton 24-12 A Perry  G Griffiths 18-18 R Mauchline  T Hurcom 29-10 J Flye  R Janes 28-7 M Hughes

Tuesday 8th August 2023
The midweek team visited Penarth Rectory Road for their 13th and penultimate game of the season, hoping for a full 14 points to keep the pressure on league leaders Barry Romilly, although with Penarth sitting in third place in the league this was going to be a tough assignment. Dinas got off to a good start on two of their rinks and after the first six ends had move into an 11 shot lead overall with the rinks of Janes and Marks leading 9-3 and 8-1 respectively. Over the next six ends both of these rinks continued to dominate, both extending their leads to 13 shots with Ritchie Janes' rink leading 20-7 and Paul Marks at 16-3. Unfortunately for the visitors Gareth Griffiths' rink was finding it hard going against the very capable home rink, lead by Clive Fry, and were trailing by seven shots 9-16 whilst Gerry White was narrowly 10-11 behind.

Over the final six ends both Janes and Marks went further in front to ensure a comfortable victory for Dinas, unfortunately the rink of Huw Lloyd, Keith Davies, Andrew Harvey and Gerry White dropped two shots on the final end to lose by three overall whilst Griffiths' rink went down by seven. This left Dinas with 10 points of the 14 on offer with one final home game to come.                                                                                                              Final score: Dinas Powis 81 (10pts) Penarth (Rectory Road) 54 (4pts).                                                                                                                    Rink scores: G Griffiths 16-23 C Fry R Janes 28-10 C Grant P Marks 24-5 N Chandler G White 13-16 P Gunter

Saturday 5th August 2023

With no first team fixture it was left to the ‘A’ team to take centre stage, as they entertained Whitchurch Hospital ‘A’ looking to step up their challenge to win the East Wales Conference Division.  With home advantage being key it was the rink of Roy and Keith Davies, combining with Walter and Neil Williams who romped into an 13-0 lead after 11 ends, before settling for a comprehensive 21-10.5 win. Meanwhile on rink six Paul Marks was ably assisted by Tony Morgan, Mark Somers and David Vowles as they never looked troubled in winning 29-11.5.

The final rink was a much more evenly contested affair with Tony Gittings, Andy Locker, Robin Charlton and Gerry White finding it tough going as Lance Price bowled well to keep his rink just ahead until the penultimate end when the Dinas rink recorded two threes to come home by 22-18. An excellent return for the Dinas players who competed well throughout to fully deserve all 10 points on offer.                                                                              Final score – Dinas Powys ‘A’ 72-40 Whitchurch Hospital ‘A’.                                                                                                                              Rink scores: P Marks 29-11.5 A McCarthy  G White 22-18 L Price  N Williams 21-10.5 H Kent

Wednesday 2nd August 2023                                                                                                                                                                      Despite the early morning rain, the green was in a splendid condition as the midweek team hosted Cowbridge for game 12 of the Munro Cup season. The first six ends were evenly contested with three rinks very close, whilst Dinas held a six-shot lead overall at 21-15, courtesy of skip Chris Daws, ably assisted by Tony Gittings, Roy Davies and Walter Williams who had sprinted into an 11-2 lead. Over the middle six ends Dinas accelerated away, winning 17 of the 24 ends played and rattling up 29 shots to the visitors 11 as they extended their lead to 24 at 50-26.

Clearly hitting good form Dinas kept their focus across all four rinks as they put Cowbridge to the sword over the final six ends, to eventually romp home 87-42 winning on all four rinks and picking up the full 14 points as they continue to chase league leaders Barry Romilly.                                      Top honours on the night went to the aforementioned Chris Daws rink, who steadily accrued shots throughout the evening finishing 27-11 winners.
