Match reports for June 2022

29th June 2022

With no previous weekend fixtures due to the club hosting the Deaf Bowls Home Nations Championships it was the midweek team that resumed play with a home fixture against Rhoose BC. Following her twin sisters footsteps it was Sonia Letts who made her debut with President Paul Marks, surprisingly on rink No 6!!. That rink set a fast pace racing into a 20 shots to two lead at the half way stage, helped by a seven on end six. Finishing with a five they comfortably won 31-7.

A hectic start on rink two meanwhile saw 21 shots scored on the first six ends, with the home side just nudging ahead 11-10. Thereafter they took a measure of control, and with lead David Lougher in good form eventually ran out 24-15 winners. With both other rinks also recording victories Dinas eventually won very convincingly 104-47 to record their 8th win of the season, during which they've collected 104 of the 112 points on offer.

22nd June 2022

The midweek team travelled to Romilly Park in Barry this week looking to continue their winning run, and were pleased to welcome Denise Letts to their ranks for her midweek debut. Once again bathed in bright sunshine, and on a good green, the early exchanges were close and by the half way stage Dinas had established a 13 shot lead across the board with three rinks up. The second half reflected the first, with Matthew Gerhensons rink dropping a shot on the last end to draw 12-12, whilst Ritchie Janes' rink, with Tony Gittings, Huw Lloyd and Tim Hurcom performed well to earn top rink honours at 22-8. Dinas extending their advantage by a further 13 shots to run out winners by 26 shots at 77-51 and register their seventh win of the season.

Dinas continued their midweek league season by hosting Sully Sports on a gloriously sunny evening and were pleased to welcome back long standing and life member Neil Giles to their ranks. The match was closely fought and after six ends Sports held a narrow 20-23 lead, in no small part to Mike Acklands rink surprisingly dropping a six on the very first end. After 12 ends there was nothing to split the teams with the scores level at 45 each, with both teams ahead on two rinks. It wasn't until the final third period that the home side were able to forge into a clear lead, eventually running out winners by 21 shots at 82-61, and securing 10 points. Top marks go to Chris Daws rink, with Tony Gittings, newcomer Huw Lloyd and Neil Williams recording a handsome 30-11 victory.

Today Dinas Powys travelled to Croesyceliog in the first round of Carruthers Shield, the home side got off to a flyer leading by 13 shots after 10 ends. By 15 ends Dinas had turned things around to lead by 12 shots and had three rinks up. The losing rink pulling back to only nine down was giving Dinas every chance. Things then changed again but Dinas held strong to win by 10 shots, 89-79, and will now play Coedgwilym away in the next round. (MW Capt.)

The midweek team entertained Sully on a dry but windy Wednesday evening, looking to record their fifth victory of the Munro Cup season, and were delighted to welcome both Emma Woodcock and Huw Lloyd to their ranks. The visitors were proving to be stubborn opposition during the opening stages and indeed after six of the 18 ends the scores were deadlocked at 22 all with Paul Marks' rink leading 9-2 against the evergreen Dennis Edwards, whilst Ritchie Janes rink had slipped 1-8 behind against Trevor Murphy.

During the middle third of the game however Dinas took a big stride forward as they eased into a 15 shot lead after 12 ends, 51-36 courtesy in no small part to Janes picking up a six on end 11, which he was to repeat on end 14.

In the end Dinas ran out winners by 22 shots at 80-58 but were denied all 14 points as Alun Rees picked up a two on the final end to tie his rink 16-16 with home skip Matthew Gershenson.

4th June 2022

Whilst the Welsh Open Championship has understandably taken up a lot of peoples time and attention over the last few days Dinas have still completed three matches this past week, with mixed success.

On Tuesday 31st May the Ladies continued their fine start to the Doubles Rink season with a very convincing 51-14 shot home win against Rhoose. Jayne Illingworths rink picked up 17 shots over the last six ends to win 26-7, whilst Ann Frasers rink raced away to a 20-2 lead before finishing 25-7 winners. Four wins out of four is a very impressive start to the season.

On Wednesday 1st June the Men's midweek team travelled to Llantwit Major for their fourth Munro Cup game of the season. After a relatively even first five ends Dinas found their rhythm and overwhelmed their opponents to eventually run out convincing winners by 50 shots 93-43 collecting all 14 points on offer.

Rink scores: P Marks 19-8 C Hiscock  M Ackland 24-14 G Merchant  M Prosser 26-11 J Crane  M Gershenson 24-10 G Jones

Today, Saturday 4th June the 'A' team hosted a strengthened Ely Valley 'A' team and unfortunately were never in the hunt suffering a first defeat of the season going down on all three rinks by 41-74 overall. Perhaps a harsh lesson for Captain Neil Williams and his troops, but one the team will undoubtedly bounce back from.
