Dinas Powis secured a place in this season's Alun Martin Memorial Cup final with a hard fought, 40-32 shot victory over a very competitive Penarth Windsor outfit.
Both semi-finals of this this two rink competition were played out at Barry Plastics on Sunday 17th August, with Barry Romilly and Millwood contesting the second semi-final.
For Dinas, Mike Ackland's rink, of Joe Coles, Dave Ireland and Paul Marks, had their hands full against the vastly experienced Ken McLeod, ably supported by Paul Gunter, and indeed at the half way stage they trailed by six, with the score standing 12-6 in Windsor's favour. Ackland's rink however dug in and slowly clawed their way back into the game before producing a strong finish, scoring 10 shots over the last five ends to come from behind a record a fine 20-15 win.
On the second rink skip Gareth Griffiths, with David James, Jon Ackland and Tim Hurcom were taking on a Matthew Woodcock lead quartet including Rod Hudson, Eddie Thorne and Tony Holmes. Similarly it was the Windsor who enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and at the half way stage they were holding a five shot 12-7 lead. The game however seemed to turn on the 12th end, with Dinas taking a fine five to even matters at 12-12. Thereafter momentum was with the villagers and despite some fine bowling from Woodcock Dinas were able to push on and secure a 20-17 win.
The victory sees Dinas through to the final, where the will now face Millwood on Sunday 14th September 2014, at an as yet to be confirmed venue.
