Dinas Powis 'A' team got their PG2 Division One season off to a positive start with an excellent home victory over an experienced Barry Athletic 'A' team this afternoon, Saturday 26th April 2014.
A pre match pep talk by captain Paul Marks, in which he outlined his hopes and expectations for the coming season, helped focus his team, who were keen to impress, having fallen to defeat in the corresponding fixture last year.
Indeed Dinas got off to a flying start, and with lead Joe Coles showing up well, Andre Desrosiers rink took 13 unanswered shots in the first four ends to establish a firm grip they would not relinquish. With seven ends played Dinas were in front across all four rinks with a healthy 18 shot advantage at 37-19.
The Athletic fought back during the middle seven ends where the spoils were shared, and whilst Dinas were able to maintain their 18 shot lead, two of the rinks, Neil Giles' at 13-11 and Alun Jones at 13-13 were very tight with all to play for.
As the match drew to a close captain Paul Marks' rink held off a spirited Athletic fight back to hold on to a one shot victory, whilst Neil Giles' rink were able to push on to claim four shot win. Unfortunately for Alun Jones' rink, with both skip Paul Webley and Athletic captain Gary Jones in fine form they eventually succumbed to a narrow three shot defeat. Pride of place however went to Des' rink who recorded a resounding 35-13 win as Dinas bagged 12 points to get their league season off to a great start.
