    Hugh began playing bowls at Newtown BC when he was 15 years old. He also played at Bridgend Municipal BC before joining Dinas Powis in 1971. He was appointed Club Treasurer in 1976 and has been an Officer of the Club for the last 40 years, holding office as Fixture Secretary, Assistant Treasurer, Chairman and Club Captain. In 1992 he was elected as Club President and in the same year was made a Life Member in recognition of his service to the Club.

    Hugh has been a Vale of Glamorgan CBA committee member for 39 years and was County President in 1991. He has managed both the County Championship and Senior Championship teams and was elected as an Honorary Member of the Association in 1997.  He is also a Life Member of the South Vale BA.  

He was appointed to the WBA Council in 1992 having previously been WBA District Competitions Secretary for 4 years.                  Hugh was a National Selector for 16 years and was Welsh Team Manager between 2001 and 2004.  He was elected WBA President in 2008 and made a Life Member of the Association in 2010.  His huge contribution to the game of bowls was recognised with Presidency of the BIBC in 2012.

     Hugh was a County player and was an Indoor International. He has won Indoor and Outdoor Welsh titles and has the distinction of being the only Welsh player to have held the British Isles Indoor and Outdoor Fours titles in the same year.

    In 2015 Hugh was persuaded to come out of retirement to manage the Vale of Glamorgan County team.  They won the championship for the first time since 2004.
